Vitalhotel Schulenberg · Upper Harz
The Oker reservoir —
right on our doorstep.
The lake
Das Vitalhotel Schulenberg lies directly on the shore of the Oker reservoir — less than a five-minute walk from the entrance to the water. The lake stretches across 225 hectares, reaches 65 metres at its deepest point and is held back by a 75-metre-high dam wall. Stay here and you wake up to a lake view.
A legend surrounds the Oker reservoir: when the dam was flooded in 1956, the villages of Mittel- and Unterschulenberg sank beneath the water. In clear weather and on a calm lake, so the story goes, you can still make out the church tower far below from the shore — and on misty mornings, hear the ringing of its bells.
Right at the water
What awaits you at the Oker reservoir
Swimming & bathing
The water of the Oker reservoir is clean, cold and clear. On warm summer days, guests head straight from the hotel down to the shore. Official bathing spots are on the northern shore — just a few minutes away on foot.
Hiking along the shore
The circular trail around the Oker reservoir runs through untouched coniferous forest, across rocky outcrops and again and again right down to the water. Please note (as of May 2026): the Bramke bridge is currently being rebuilt and is closed — please allow for a detour. Up-to-date information on the alternative route is available at reception.
Stand-up paddling & canoeing
The lake is open to non-motorised watercraft. SUP boards and canoes can be hired in the area. Paddling along the steep slopes is one of the quiet highlights of a stay in the Harz.
Fishing
The Oker reservoir is a recognised fishing water for trout and pike. A fishing licence is required. The still early-morning mist over the lake turns dawn fishing into an experience all its own — straight from the hotel.
Fitness trail right by the hotel
A well-laid-out fitness trail begins right at the Vitalhotel. Running and strength stations among the trees, with a view of the lake — perfect for warming up before a hike or as a workout in its own right. Free of charge, accessible any time.
Reachable on foot
Two destinations, one hike
Oker dam~90 min
The 75-metre-high dam wall lies at the northern end of the lake — reachable on foot via the shore path in about 90 minutes from the hotel. From the crown of the wall you look out over the entire valley and, in clear weather, all the way to the Brocken. The structure is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Harz Water Management.
Romkerhall waterfall~45 min (from the dam)
A 64-metre free fall — the highest waterfall in the Harz, created in 1863 for King George V. In spring, the meltwater thunders down the cliff; in winter it freezes into a work of ice art and draws climbers from all over Germany. Free parking on the B498, no admission fee.
Tip for collectors
